This year's esCARPment shows promise to build on last year's momentum and continue to advance the sport of carp on the fly angling. We are expecting this year to have the largest registration and prize purse yet. Despite this we will keep the event exact to its roots. Details of this years events are as follows:

  • FLY SWAP! At registration you are welcome (but not required) to get in on the fly swap. Just throw a fly and your name into the hat. Fly should be any fly for any warm water species. Feel free to let loose and submit anything, this is meant to be fun.

  • Friday July 12th, 2019 is the “captains meeting”. We will have a meet and greet for the anglers, check in, and go over the rules. This is an informal come and go as you please meeting that will begin at 4pm and continue as long as there is still beer to drink.

  • Location of captains meeting and weigh in will be Action Angler north of New Braunfels, Texas on the Guadalupe River.

Important rules to know are:

  1. All anglers must have a valid state of Texas fishing license.

  2. Fishing is only allowed in PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE Texas waters that are fed by one of Texas’s many aquifers in drainages west of the Balcones Escarpment (see green shaded area in image). A good rule of thumb is to stay west of Interstate 35. Anglers should take caution to ensure they are not trespassing on private property. Anglers may be required to verify the location of their catch so GEOTAG photos.

  3. Fly rods only; no other fishing equipment of any kind is allowed.

  4. Artificial ‘flies’ only; under no circumstance should any angler use anything that resembles live bait nor are flies allowed to be scented/dipped.

  5. Only one fly may be used and this fly must be connected directly to the fly line with a continuous leader uninterrupted by the attachment of a bobber or indicator meant to show the ‘take’ of the fish.

  6. Tournament starts at 6am July 13th and ends at 6pm July 13th; please ensure that you are at the ‘weigh’ in by 6pm to avoid being disqualified.

  7. Common carp only; no other species may be entered.

  8. All fish must be hooked in the mouth after biting the fly.

  9. Catch and release only; all fish must be released alive.

  10. The scale of points will follow the contours of the Balcones esCARPment when view from above. See image for explanation; point system will follow this breakdown:

    • 14-24” = 1 point per inch

    • 25-30” = 2 points per inch

    • 31-35” = 3 points per inch

    • 36” or larger = 4 points per inch

    • Take the length of the fish and multiply by either 1x, 2x, 3x or 4x depending on the bracket it falls into and this is the points you will be assigned.

    • MIRROR CARP ARE DOUBLE POINTS

  11. Fish must be photographed in such a manner that the measuring device is visible, as well as the entire fish (from mouth to tail) and photos must include the tournament token. Again, geotag photos.

  12. In the event of a tie the win will go to the angler of the two in a tie that caught the single largest fish.

  13. If there is interest, we will have a cash buy in side pot for single largest fish of any species other than carp.

  14. Lastly and most importantly, have fun, be good representatives of the sport, and be safe :)
